About this role
A PTW Welding Operator (Pull-Through Welding or Portal Type Welding Operator) operates automated gantry or portal-type welding systems—typically utilizing Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) technology—to manufacture heavy structural steel components like H-beams and I-beams in pre-engineered building (PEB) and fabrication plants.
Job Purpose
To set up, operate, and monitor automated pull-through or portal welding lines to produce high-strength structural steel beams while ensuring compliance with engineering blueprints, quality standards, and safety rules.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Machine Setup & Operation: Align plates using guide rollers and hydraulic clamps, configure welding heads and wire feeds, and input parameters (voltage, amperage, and travel speed) via PLC/HMI panels to ensure smooth automated runs.
Flux Management & Quality Control: Manage electrode spools, operate flux recovery systems, inspect finished beams for dimensional accuracy and penetration, and support quality checks.
Maintenance & Safety: Perform pre/post-shift inspections, clear slag, replace worn parts, and adhere strictly to shop-floor safety and PPE protocols.
Required skills
Core Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in SAW processes, PLC/HMI controls, and flux recovery systems. Competencies: Ability to read blueprints, interpret welding symbols, and handle heavy materials using overhead cranes and hydraulic clamps. Education & Experience: High school diploma or ITI/vocational background with 2 to 5 years of relevant heavy structural or PEB fabrication experience.
