About this role
A Mining Surveyor measures, maps, and monitors surface and underground mining operations to guide safe extraction, maintain statutory compliance, and calculate material volumes.
Job Overview & Objective
The Mining Surveyor is responsible for accurate spatial data collection, surface and underground plan updates, and volume/tonnage calculations for mineral deposits. They work closely with mining engineers and operations teams to direct excavation, monitor ground stability, and enforce safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Surface & Underground Mapping: Conduct detailed surveys to record the size, shape, elevation, and direction of tunnels, open-pit benches, and working faces.
Volume & Tonnage Calculations: Measure extracted ore, overburden, spoil piles, and stockpiles to support operational planning and financial reporting.
Mine Planning & Control: Peg drill patterns for blasting, mark out structural boundaries, and control the alignment of underground development.
Statutory Compliance: Prepare, certify, and update official mine plans in accordance with regulatory bodies (such as DGMS or local mining authorities).
Ground Stability & Safety Monitoring: Assess movement, subsidence, and potential hazards using modern scanning tools.
Data Integration: Build 3D models and site maps utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), CAD, and drone/laser scan data.
Required skills
Education: Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mine Surveying, Geomatics, Mining Engineering, or a related spatial science field. Certification: Mandatory local statutory certification (e.g., Surveyor Certificate of Competency / DGMS certification in coal or metal mines). Experience: Typically requires 3 to 6+ years of hands-on surveying experience in open-cast or underground mining environments. Technical Skills: Proficiency in Total Stations, DGPS/GPS, drones, laser scanners, and software like AutoCAD and GIS.
