About this role
A Hot Saw Operator controls heavy-duty hot-saw machinery in steel rolling mills or metal fabrication plants to cut hot-rolled steel products (such as bars, tubes, or structural sections) to exact production lengths.
Job Overview
• Position Title: Hot Saw Operator
• Department / Shop: Rolling Mill / Production / Metal Fabrication
• Reports To: Machining Supervisor, Shift In-Charge, or Production Manager
• Employment Type: Full-Time (Shift-based / Hourly or Salaried)
Key Responsibilities
• Machine Operation: Operate hot saw systems to cut hot-rolled steel products according to rolling schedules and length specifications.
• Setup & Adjustments: Set blade speeds, feed rates, and gauge stops based on product grade, size, and thermal expansion properties.
• Quality & Dimension Checks: Monitor cuts continuously to verify length, squareness, and tolerances using industrial measuring tools (calipers, tape measures, or automated length gauges).
• Blade & Equipment Inspection: Inspect saw blades, cooling systems, and mechanical components before, during, and after shifts for wear, cracks, or damage.
• Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning, blade changes, greasing, and basic upkeep of the hot saw machinery.
• Troubleshooting & Reporting: Identify mechanical malfunctions, vibration issues, or abnormal cuts, and report them immediately to the maintenance or engineering team.
• Workflow Coordination: Communicate closely with the rolling mill crew, furnace operators, and quality control personnel to maintain a continuous, safe flow of hot material.
• Safety & Housekeeping: Adhere strictly to hot-work safety protocols, wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE: heat-resistant gear, face shields, steel-toe boots, earplugs), and keep the work area clear of scale and debris.
• Record Keeping: Log production output, downtime, blade life, and shift reports accurately in digital or paper logs.
Required skills
