About this role
A Melter in a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) operates and manages furnaces (such as induction furnaces or EAFs) to melt raw materials into molten steel. They are responsible for controlling temperature, chemical composition, managing slag, and tapping metal while ensuring strict safety protocols in extreme heat environments.
Key Responsibilities
Furnace Operation: Safely operate industrial furnaces to melt scrap, alloys, and pig iron to meet daily production targets.
Quality & Chemistry Control: Monitor molten metal temperatures, take samples for spectrometer testing, and make alloy additions to achieve the exact metallurgical grade required.
Refractory Management: Perform and oversee refractory lining, patching, and sintering of the furnace crucible to prevent leaks and structural failures.
Tapping and Pouring: Manage the slag removal process and oversee the tapping of molten steel into ladles for continuous casting.
Safety & Maintenance: Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to work around extreme temperatures, adhere to ISO and OSHA guidelines, and troubleshoot furnace-related issues.
Required skills
Experience: Usually requires 3 to 5+ years of hands-on experience in furnace operation and refractory maintenance, specifically with medium-frequency induction furnaces or Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). Skills: Knowledge of slag chemistry, deoxidation methods, and pyrometer/spectrometer usage
