About this role
A Manager of Operations (FA / Ferro Alloys) in an SMS (Steel Melting Shop) oversees the specialized production of ferro-alloys or alloy-steel processing within the steelmaking unit. In this context, SMS stands for Steel Melting Shop, and FA typically designates Ferro Alloys or a specific operational bay handling alloy additions, specialized melting, and charge-mix optimizations.
Required skills
Submerged Arc & Induction Melting: Deep proficiency in running high-capacity electric furnaces used for smelting ferro-alloys and melting steel grades.Metallurgical Process Control: Expertise in slag chemistry, deoxidation, alloy recovery rates, and checking chemical compositions (e.g., carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus levels). Charge-Mix & Burden Calculations: Formulating raw material inputs (quartz, metal scrap, reducing agents, and various alloy additions) to optimize costs and output quality.
Good to have
Specialty Steel & Alloy Expertise: Hands-on experience producing high-carbon, spring steel, stainless steel, or specific ferro-alloys (like Silico-Manganese, Ferro-Manganese, Ferro-Silicon) via Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or Submerged Arc Furnace routes. Secondary Metallurgy Knowledge: Familiarity with advanced secondary refining units such as Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization (VOD), Vacuum Arc Degassing (VAD), or Ladle Refining Furnaces (LRF) for ultra-clean steel. Advanced Tech & Automation: Experience working with process automation systems, Level 2 furnace automation, and enterprise modules like SAP PP/MM (Production Planning / Materials Management) for performance tracking.
