A security guard (or security officer) is responsible for protecting a property, its assets, employees, and visitors from hazards such as theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, fire, or medical emergencies. They act as a visible deterrent to crime and serve as first responders when incidents occur.

Required skills
Observation and Situational Awareness: The ability to notice subtle changes in an environment, identify suspicious behavior, and spot potential hazards (like a propped-open door, smoke, or a missing asset) before they escalate. Conflict Resolution & De-escalation: Crucial for managing aggressive or uncooperative individuals calmly and professionally using verbal communication rather than physical force whenever possible. Communication Skills: Strong verbal skills to give clear instructions, coordinate with emergency services, and interact with the public. Good written skills are also vital for filing accurate, detailed incident reports. Physical Fitness & Stamina: Many shifts require standing or walking for long periods (often 8 to 12 hours), patrolling large perimeters, and occasionally responding quickly in an emergency. Technical Literacy: Familiarity with modern security infrastructure, including operating CCTV camera systems, electronic access control systems, metal detectors, fire alarm panels, and digital reporting software.

Prior Military or Law Enforcement Experience: Highly valued because candidates already understand chain-of-command, high-pressure crisis management, and legal protocols.Advanced Technical Literacy: Experience managing modern security infrastructure, such as IP-based CCTV monitoring software, automated AI surveillance analytics, electronic visitor management databases, and fire alarm panels. First Aid, CPR, & AED Certification: While sometimes mandatory, holding active, up-to-date life-saving certifications makes a guard the immediate go-to first responder for medical crises. Specialized De-escalation & Self-Defense Training: Formal training in conflict resolution, verbal judo, or defensive tactics minimizes the need to use physical or mechanical force.Bilingual or Multilingual Abilities: Being fluent in a second language (such as Spanish, French, or local regional languages) is a major asset in corporate lobbies, hospitals, retail environments, and large public events. Industry-Specific Knowledge: Familiarity with specialized regulations—such as OSHA safety standards, HIPAA rules for healthcare security, or retail loss prevention techniques. Valid Driver’s License & Clean Driving Record: Essential for posts that require mobile patrols (driving security vehicles) or responding across large, multi-building corporate or industrial campuses.
