About this role
Prepare detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings for steel structures, transmission towers, poles, or cable management frameworks.
Generate component layouts, cross-sectional views, and Bill of Materials (BOM) / Bill of Quantities (BOQ).
Coordinate with project engineers and production teams to resolve design clashes or fabrication discrepancies.
Maintain revision control, organize master CAD file libraries, and ensure adherence to relevant engineering and industrial safety standards.
Required skills
For an AutoCAD Draftsman role—especially in sectors spanning heavy manufacturing, infrastructure, engineering, or power transmission (such as steel structures, towers, and cabling)—employers look for a distinct mix of technical software fluency, engineering knowledge, and core soft skills. The essential skills required for an AutoCAD Draftsman are categorized below:1. Technical & Software Skills (Hard Skills)AutoCAD Proficiency: Mastery of both AutoCAD 2D (layouts, orthographic projections, detailed component drawings) and AutoCAD 3D (solid and surface modeling). Advanced CAD Tools: Working knowledge of layers, blocks, dynamic blocks, external references (Xrefs), sheet sets, attributes, and dimensioning styles. Blueprint & Technical Drawing Interpretation: Ability to accurately read, interpret, and translate rough hand sketches, engineer mark-ups, and complex structural or electrical blueprints into production-ready drawings. Industry Standards: Familiarity with national and international drafting standards (such as BIS, ISO, or DIN) to ensure legal and structural compliance. Complementary Software: Depending on the exact sector, familiarity with software like Revit, SolidWorks, Civil 3D, or Inventor can be a major advantage. 2. Domain-Specific Engineering KnowledgeFor Manufacturing & Infrastructure: Understanding of fabrication drawings, weld symbols, bill of materials (BOM), material specifications, and structural detailing (e.g., steel towers, poles, or heavy machinery components).Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T): Knowledge of tolerances, limits, and fits to ensure manufactured parts assemble correctly.Scale and Proportions: Strong spatial visualization skills to mentally convert 2D data into 3D structures (and vice versa) without dimensional clashes. 3. Core Soft Skills & Workplace CompetenciesExtreme Attention to Detail: A single missed decimal point or incorrect annotation can lead to severe manufacturing errors or project delays. Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking: Ability to identify structural or layout clashes on the fly and offer practical design modifications to engineers. Cross-Functional Communication: Clear communication to coordinate effectively with project managers, site engineers, and fabrication teams. Time Management: The capability to manage multiple revision cycles and deliver production-ready drawings under tight project deadlines.
