About this role
Mill-Floor Quality & Process Inspection:
Monitor hot rolling processes, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish of rolled structural profiles (angles, channels, beams) and TMT bars in real-time.
Oversee physical and mechanical testing protocols on the shop floor and in the central laboratory (tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and bend/rebend tests).
Check chemical composition parameters using spectrometer analysis during melting and rolling stages.
Laboratory & Testing Management:
Manage the plant's metallurgical testing laboratory, ensuring proper calibration, maintenance, and compliance of all testing equipment (Universal Testing Machines, spectrometers, hardness testers).
Oversee Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) procedures (such as UT, MPI) for structural steel and raw material billets.
Standards Compliance & Certification:
Ensure strict compliance with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), ASTM, ISO, and IS codes governing steel and structural manufacturing.
Maintain and update the Quality Management System (QMS) aligned with ISO 9001 standards.
Customer Audits & Third-Party Inspections:
Coordinate with Third-Party Inspection (TPI) agencies (e.g., SGS, Bureau Veritas, RITES) and major institutional clients for material clearance and dispatch approvals.
Investigate customer complaints, conduct root-cause analysis (RCA) for quality rejections, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Team Leadership & Reporting:
Lead a team of shift QC engineers, lab technicians, and dimensional inspectors.
Generate daily, weekly, and monthly quality metrics reports (rejection rates, grade compliance, yield impact) via ERP systems (SAP QM module).
Required skills
1. Technical & Metallurgical Skills Standard & Specification Compliance: In-depth knowledge of national and international standards (such as IS 2062, ASTM, BS, EN) for structural steel grades and properties. Mechanical & Destructive Testing: Expertise in supervising and evaluating tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, bend/re-bend tests, and impact testing using Universal Testing Machines (UTM). Dimensional Accuracy & Tolerances: Mastery over checking profile dimensions, straightness, squareness, camber, and weight-per-meter tolerances for structural sections using precision measuring tools (vernier calipers, micrometers, templates). Metallurgical Quality Monitoring: Monitoring microstructures, grain size, and chemical composition reports (via spectrometer) of incoming steel billets and finished rolled products. 2. Quality Control & Assurance Systems Process Quality Control (IPQC): Implementing In-Process Quality Control checks right from the reheating furnace temperature profiles to the finishing mill stands and cooling bed stages. Defect Analysis & Root Cause (RCA): Identifying rolling defects—such as surface cracks, laps, seams, underfills, scale pits, and dimensional deviations—and driving corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Documentation & Mill Test Certificates (MTC): Overseeing the generation of accurate Test Certificates/Mill Certificates for dispatches to clients, ensuring complete traceability from billet heat numbers to finished bundles. 3. Standards, Audits & Laboratory Management QMS Implementation: Strong background in maintaining and auditing ISO 9001 quality management systems within a heavy manufacturing environment. BIS / External Audits: Coordinating and managing factory inspection audits by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or third-party inspection agencies (TPIs like SGS, TÜV, Lloyds). Lab Equipment Calibration: Ensuring regular calibration and maintenance of laboratory and testing equipment (UTM, spectrometers, hardness testers).
