About this role
Furnace Operations & Process Control:Supervise continuous Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) operations during the shift, including raw material charging, melting processes, and timely metal/slag tapping. Monitor critical parameters closely: electrode slip, electrode positioning, paste levels, burden/batch mix proportions, transformer parameters, and cooling water systems. Production Target Achievement:Drive shift-wise production output and efficiency metrics to meet scheduled plant targets. Minimize electrical energy consumption (kWh per ton of production) and optimize raw material utilization (ore, coke, quartz, scrap, etc.).Quality Control:Ensure the output alloy meets established chemical composition and sizing standards through regular sample collection and coordination with the laboratory.Monitor slag characteristics and address abnormalities swiftly.Manpower & Shift Management:Deploy shift personnel (furnace operators, tappers, charging crew, helpers) effectively across operational units. Conduct safety toolbox talks prior to shift commencement and ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Maintenance & Troubleshooting:Coordinate immediately with the mechanical and electrical maintenance teams during equipment breakdowns, power fluctuations, or emergency shutdowns. Handle operational troubleshooting related to electrode breakage, bridging, gas leaks, or water cooling failures.Documentation & Reporting:Maintain precise shift logbooks regarding production tonnage, raw material consumption, power interruptions, downtime logs, and safety incidents.Submit formal shift handover notes and performance reports to incoming shift teams and management.
Required skills
Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) Operations: Deep understanding of how to operate, monitor, and control SAFs used for producing ferro-alloys (Silico Manganese, Ferro Manganese, etc.). Electrode Management: Proficiency in monitoring electrode paste levels, execution of electrode slipping, tracking electrode consumption, and preventing or managing electrode breakages. Burden & Batch Calculations: Ability to calculate and manage raw material proportions (manganese ore, quartz, coke, coal, scrap, and fluxes) to achieve the desired chemical composition of the alloy. Electrical & Mechanical Literacy: Basic understanding of electrical parameters (transformers, busbars, power factors, MW/MVA load) and mechanical setups (hydraulic systems, cooling water circuits, gas cleaning plants/bag houses). Metallurgical Quality Control: Knowledge of metal and slag chemistry, tapping procedures, chilling/casting practices, and interpretation of lab assay/spectrometer results.
